At Whanau Farms, a commitment to responsible land stewardship led them to better understand how their farming practices interact with the surrounding environment. The team turned to the Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) program for a Riparian Health Assessment an opportunity that has proven both practical and transformative to their riparian zone as they are now able to manage the area better.

The EFP program offers producers a confidential, no-cost plan to assess on-farm practices and identify opportunities for improvement. Through this in-depth on-farm assessment and action planning process, Whanau Farms gained valuable insights into key areas for their farm such as climate resilience, riparian health and biodiversity, and soil type.

For Whanau Farms, the experience was not just about identifying risks; it was about unlocking opportunities. With a completed EFP in place, the farm is now better positioned to access Beneficial Management Practices funding, helping turn plans into tangible improvements across their operation. These investments support environmental stewardship while strengthening the farm’s resilience and long-term viability.

Damon Gray of Whanau Farms reflects on the value of the program: “Does not hurt to try, and if you follow the procedure, it is very beneficial and helpful to get your lands in good working order. We learnt a lot through the program.”

This hands-on learning and structured planning process has empowered Whanau Farms to make informed decisions that benefit both their business and the environment. With a free Riparian Health Assessment, Whanau Farms has a better understanding of their farm and its needs. Producers can use the EFP program as a practical starting point to strengthen sustainability, improve farm management, and prepare for the future.

Funding for the Environmental Farm Plan program has been provided by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3.5-billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency of the agriculture, agri‐food and agri‐based products sector. The program is delivered by IAF.
